Handling, Storing, and Shipping Samples FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Semen, Sperm, and Vaginal Discharge

  • Use gloves when handling any sample. If gloves are not available, use a new tissue or paper towel.
  • Never touch, lick, or place the sample directly on your face to smell.
  • If further visual investigation is necessary prior to sending in a sample for analysis, prepare a clean surface covered by paper towels or a clean fabric towel.
  • If the stained area is on an item that is too large to send through the mail, you may cut out the stained area instead. Please be sure to leave 3-5 inches of space around the stain.
  • Store cloth samples at room temperature until testing
  • Store the underwear in a new paper bag or envelope. Never seal in a Ziploc or any plastic bag. As a last resort, you can store them in a plastic grocery bag but do not seal it shut.
  • Let the sample dry naturally at room temperature if you cannot send it in immediately. The presence of moisture on a sample can cause the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew which can lead to the degradation of biological cells.
  • The presence of mold or mildew in the stained area of a sample will not change the outcome of the semen/saliva/blood detection. However, the sperm and skin cells will not properly bind with the primers used to amplify the DNA and can result in no DNA profile being obtained.
  • Mark the sample envelope with the date the item was worn or the date the sample was obtained if not worn (when possible).
  • Store all samples at room temperature.
  • Let cloth samples dry at room temperature before sending.
  • Most panties will fit in a #10 envelope. Most male underwear will fit in a 6×9 envelope or a
    paper bag.
  • Mark each envelope or bag the following (when available):
    • Description of item
    • Date worn
    • Date obtained
  • Place the envelope(s) or paper bag(s) in a larger paper mailer or box
  • On a separate piece of paper inside the larger mailer or box include the following details (if
    applicable):
    • Your name, email address, phone number and order number (received once the order is
      placed)
    • If you are sending in your wife’s panties, specify if you are a potential contributor and
any useful information, such as when was the last time you had ejaculated in her, and if
      you have had a vasectomy.
    • If you are sending in your husband’s underwear, specify if you are a potential
contributor (from intercourse or handling of the stains) and any useful information, such
as if he has had a vasectomy.
    • Detail your thoughts and information. We have tested many articles where the spouse
admits later that the article was licked to try to determine the content of the stains. We
      need this information.
    • Many items contain evidence of home semen tests. Please provide this information if
      applicable.
  • Do not place any paperwork in the same envelope or bag holding the article. Due to crosscontamination issues, the paperwork will not get read until the test is underway.
  • Please DO NOT use a plastic mailer or poly / plastic bag or wrapping around the garment, as this
may cause the item to sweat and destroy the sample.
